True story: every time I reintroduce myself on Instagram and tell people I used to be a teacher, there is ALWAYS at least one person who tells me, âI did not know that.â
Iâm never surprised any more because I know there are at least three reasons why they donât know something I consider to be basic information:
Theyâre new! Maybe they werenât following me the last 3591 times I told them I used to be a teacher.
They missed the previous 3591 posts where I mentioned that I used to be a teacher.
Theyâve forgotten. They follow a lot of different Instagram accounts and have an actual life to live. Put bluntly, the fact I used to be a teacher is the kind of information that will fall out of someoneâs head within seconds of hearing/ reading it.
Never assume that someone who follows your Instagram account knows who you are, what your back ground is, why youâre the right person to write what youâre writing (this is especially important for non-fiction writers), or the many ways in which youâre generally an interesting person to hang out with (online).
Use your prime real estate effectively
One of the first things I often tell people to add to their account is a PINNED post that introduces who you are.
Pinning this post gives any new visitor to your account an obvious place to land and find out more about you before they decide whether or not to follow your account. These posts are âprime real estateâ so use them thoughtfully.
Some people will decide your account isnât for them - thatâs ok, youâre not trying to convince people youâre worthy of their attention, BUT you also donât want to be so secretive about who you are and what youâre interested in that they canât work out whether they should follow you or not.
PRO TIP: refresh this pinned post every 3-6 months so any new followers are shown it in their feed, in case theyâve missed the pinned post.
10 post ideas for introducing yourself
One thing I wish everyone knew about me isâŚ
Creative: a reel with this sentence âŹď¸ over the top (you could have the second half of the sentence coming in on the beat of the music), or a more simple option is to use a static image (of you) with a caption.
You could make this specific to your writing - how much you love [insert genre, writer, or book that will appeal to your ideal reader]
Things you might not know about me
Creative: can be a static image with a caption but you could also create a reel like this one from my grid. You donât need to create a complicated video - the video is the âplateâ for serving the âmain mealâ of the information you want the viewer to know.
You can use this to give away some silly details and give a hint of your personality, or you could link it back to your writing career or journey so people know what to expect from you.
A straight forward intro!
Creative: a reel (or picture of you with a caption) that simply lists some bits and bobs about who you are and what you do! This is a fab example from
(whoâs a member of TMI đđť.Notice how Rachel has included some details about her writing, but also more random facts about herself:
