Interesting advice! I think the same principles apply to whether or not you’d want to grow an audience on social media and use the platform to promote your (online) business. In that case however, there are also plenty of alternatives to promote yourself and your business in the offline world. Do you have any thoughts on alternatives to social media for promoting non-fiction or memoir writing?
I loved this. I would be interested in reading about how to manage time with social media. I don't consider myself very competent with it, but as you said, I could see it being a huge time suck if I were ever to put more of an effort into building my platform there.
Hi Mirella, thanks so much for reading and taking the time to comment. Re. safeguarding time - it's a super-personal thing and establishing your own routines and boundaries can take some experimenting and wrong turns but if you're interested in how I manage this, I've written about it before here https://nicolawashington.substack.com/p/ways-to-stay-sane-on-instagram-in 😊
Hi Nicola, I'm not sure how long I've been following you here or if I read that piece when it came out, but I'm rereading it now, and I just have to say, it is tremendously helpful. What I love is how you both share your personal philosophy, and model how we can do the same when it comes to our approach to Instagram - and while I know I originally asked about time, that piece is also making me think about my standard of success (a brilliant framework, by the way) and how I center my readers there as opposed to the algorithm (LOVED "no one can live on salt alone"). What I really like about your work is that you encourage us to be authentic and to figure out what works for us personally as opposed to trying to be something we're not. I could go on about this, but I'll just say, I haven't really enjoyed my efforts to build a platform on IG, but reading what you've written, perhaps that can change. Anyway, thank you for linking to that post. I'll continue to reflect on how I can apply this to my own efforts.
Really useful points here. The only one I'd add to the 'don't use it' side would be: don't use it if you hate it. That said, there are ways to learn to love it, which I'm sure everyone in your membership can attest to!!

You're so welcome Mirella - thank you for such kind and thoughtful reflections on what I have written 😊

Haha! That is VERY true and probably should be number 1 on the list! Thanks for reading, Katie, I always appreciate your insights ❤️
