I'm so happy I found you on here, so much of what you write resonates with me. I've never liked the frenzy of New Year's either, or the dualistic nature of resolutions. Making a resolution indicates that you have previously not lived up to your own expectations on yourself, and I want to move away from all that pressure towards a sustainable acceptance of where I find myself and only ever move from that space. Oh, and I must read that Phone fix book.
The Phone Fix is really really good. It was my fave non-fiction book of 2024! If you're on Instagram at all at the moment, I highly recommend Dr Faye Begeti's account too - she posts as the_brain_doctor. Lovely to meet you on here Lisa, I really appreciate your reflections and insights 😊
I like your approach of taking it slow in January, Nicola. After all nature itself is in the state or slumber and we humans should also be allowed to follow this rhythm at least to some degree (not so easy with jobs etc.). And your looking back artcile is extremly informative. I wish I could save it to look back at again and properly digest (is there such a function on Substack? I'm still very new here). My brain is in a state of total flux after haing kids off school for 2 weeks now and I feel like my brain is not 'adulting' very well.
Completely agree - we are part of nature but I think we've lost so much of that connection in our modern lives. It's something I'm really interested in integrating more connection to the natural world into my life. Re. saving articles - yes there is that function. What you need to do is click on the three dots in the top corner of the article (for mobile)/ your screen (on computer) and in that menu you will see the option to save. I use it alot to save things I don't have time to read there and then but know I want to come back to.
similar vibe here x

Love this! Great to hear about mirrored issues around moving from one year to the next. Your manifesto speaks on many levels! Good luck for '25
