Welcome to Day One of the WAKE UP INSTAGRAM Challenge - a week-long series of 10 min daily tasks to ‘wake up’ your Instagram account and get you back in front of your favourite people after you’ve been on a break.

TASK ONE

Today’s 10 minutes task asks you to visit one of the most-neglected parts of the Instagram eco-system: Stories.

Listen to the audio, or read the instructions below, to join in!

  1. Go to Stories at the top of your home feed.

  2. Set a timer for 10 mins and watch Stories. Your Stories feed will only show you accounts you follow so if you come across accounts and you can’t remember why you’re following them, it’s a good time to do some housekeeping and unfollow.

  3. Interact GENEROUSLY with the Stories you watch. Hit the heart button, send emojis, respond to polls, fill in Q&A boxes, DM people if you feel compelled. Don’t hold back, get involved. If you even think about sending someone a comment, DO IT.

How does it work?

Many of this week’s tasks work on the assumption that Instagram ‘likes’ accounts that are active. By engaging with Stories you are being a good Instagram ‘citizen’, but this task isn’t really about the algorithm at all - it’s about the people in your online eco-system.

Think of it as the digital equivalent of walking down your local high street or anywhere else where you might see people you know but haven’t seen for a while. You might not stop for a chat, but you raise a hand in greeting and say hi, letting them know you’re back from wherever you have been.

By actively participating in your online community in this way you are reminding people that you are around, which in turn makes them much more likely to take an interest in what you are doing too.

I hope you’ve found this useful - let me know in the comments if you have any questions or thoughts. I’ll be back tomorrow with the second task of the challenge and I hope you’ll join me!
